Exeter Golf and Country Club celebrated a historic double win with a reception party for golfers of the winning teams of the county finals at the club. This is the very first time the prestigious Still Cup and the DCGU Palariet Memorial Trophy have been won by the same golf club in the same year and so, this year will not only go down in the club’s history as the most successful golf season ever, but also in the history of golf in the South West.
The Captains of the golf teams Darren Thorpe and Dot Butler, celebrated with their team players, President and many members of the golf section of Exeter Golf and Country Club with a drinks reception and slide show of their triumphant wins at the golf tournaments, which took place in late August.
Martin Halse, General Manager of Exeter Golf and Country Club said, “We are incredibly proud of our golf teams in winning the two most prestigious trophies in the region, and to do so in the same season is just outstanding. This is the first time one club has ever held these two trophies in one year and so both teams really will go down in the club’s history books as a source of inspiration for our future golf players and teams.”
Exeter Golf and Country Club’s achievement winning the Devon County Palariet Memorial Trophy is a two-fold success, as this is the first time the club has won the trophy since 1977. The Men’s Golf Team for the Palariet Memorial Trophy at Yelverton, included 16 players from the club, headed up by Captain, Darren Thorpe.
The Still Cup golf tournament which took place at Teign Valley, was won for a consecutive fourth year by Exeter Golf and Country Club’s Ladies’ Golf Team. After beating Churston in the morning semi-finals, Exeter Golf and Country Club went on to comprehensively beat Saunton in the afternoon finals. Dot Butler, Lady Captain and her team of 7 lady golfers took the day by storm following a successful season representing the golf club across the region.
The success of the golf teams comes at a time when Exeter Golf and Country Club are enjoying sporting achievements across their sections with a promotional win for the Ladies’ Tennis Team who will enter Division 2 next year, and the Men’s Tennis Team coming second in the First Division.
Exeter Golf and Country Club is also investing heavily this year in improving the sport facilities at the club. Three of the six squash courts were recently refurbished including the installation of glass backs. The courts have been awarded the Gold Standard by England Squash and Racketball and are one of only two clubs in the region to boast this recognition.
The indoor swimming pool and spa facilities are also undergoing a major renovation with new spa facilities including a Jacuzzi, steam room and 2 saunas, along with a complete refurbishment of the pool area and changing rooms.
Martin Halse continues, “Exeter Golf and Country Club is the region’s finest leisure venue and we will continue to reinvest in our wonderful facilities for our members to enjoy. Many of our members have been loyal to the club for many years, we really do have lifetime members, and there are reasons why. We offer the best sport and health facilities and coaching, high quality dining in our restaurant and fantastic social events within a stunning venue for people of all ages to enjoy, from children to seniors.”
