Awarded the prestigious prize ahead of a list of nominees that included Colt Data Centre Services, Microsoft and TelecityGroup, SCC emerged ahead of a highly competitive field after judges praised an environmental strategy that combines innovate approaches to carbon reduction with an unrivalled long term vision. The panel highlighted the company’s whole lifecycle approach to its data centre building – which saw an existing structure utilised to create a new facility founded on energy efficiency – and similarly commended the firm’s carbon offsetting initiative, which distributes fuel-efficient cooking stoves to poor African communities.

Geomorfologist Bjorn Oddsson van de University of Iceland, kondigde aan dat de Grimsvotn vulkaan op IJsland duidelijk minder actief is geworden en dat de intensiteit van de vulkaan snel vermindert. Hierdoor verwacht Icelandair dat er geen verdere hinder zal ontstaan van de vulkaanuitbarsting.

Sinds 874 A.D. zijn er zo’n 125 vulkaanuitbarstingen voorgekomen op IJsland. Zonder de vulkanen zou IJsland het moeten stellen zonder zijn kenmerkende geografische uitzicht waardoor het wereldwijd toeristen aantrekt. De meeste erupties of uitbarstingen hebben weinig ongemak veroorzaakt en sommige hebben in het buitenland dan weer meer overlast bezorgd dan in IJsland zelf.

De uitbarsting van de Eyjafjallajokull vorig jaar, creërde vele vertragingen en vluchtannuleringen die wereldwijd werden gevoeld. Ironisch genoeg ondervond IJsland dankzij de windrichting minder hinder dan andere delen van Noord-Europa.

De uitbarsting van de Grimsvotn in mei 2011 spuwde een gigantische aswolk de lucht in, zelfs nog groter dan die van vorig jaar; de impact op vluchten blijkt nu echter veel kleiner. De redenen hiervoor waren dat de asdeeltjes deze keer zwaarder bleken waardoor de as zich niet zo ver zou verspreiden en bovendien voerde de wind de as nu niet in dezelfde richtingen mee als vorige keer.

The city of Oslo has been donated with an astrological clock during a recent unveiling ceremony hosted by Mayor Fabian Stang. The clock was donated by Christian Ringes, CEO of Eiendomsspar.

Artists Elena Engelsen and Per Ung, two of Norway’s most renowned artists, spent over one year collaborating on the clock’s design. Engelsen created the exotic animal characters star, while Ung designed the human characters in the zodiac.

The Oslo astrological clock is 346 cm in diameter; with the clock face at 180 cm. Star signs are cast in bronze and are painted. The rings are made of copper and are also painted. The tiles in the dial are coated with 22-carat gold leaf and the total weight of the clock is approx. 1,000 kg.

The astrological clock is among other popular innovative designs and landmarks in Oslo, such the ‘Peacock’ fountain at the National Theatre and the Tiger Statue in Oslo Central Station, all of which help to contribute in promoting tourism in Oslo.

The clock is located at Karl Johans gate 3 in central Oslo, Norway.

Iceland’s center for entrepreneurship and enterprise park, Asbru has recently launched its new updated website. The website now has developed its usability for Asbru’s potential customers, allowing them to find the services they need more efficiently.

The Asbru Enterprise Park was formed at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) abandoned its military base in Keflavik, Iceland in 2006; with this departure, over 900 local people were left unemployed. Yoko Ono visitará el mes que viene Islandia para el encendido anual de la Torre de la Paz Imagine en la isla de Videy. La Torre de la Paz es una obra de arte que Yoko Ono dedicó a la memoria de su difunto marido John Lennon, así como un faro para la paz mundial.

La isla de Videy está situada en la Bahía de Kollafjordur, cerca de Reikiavik, la capital de Islandia. La torre es un enorme rayo de luz proyectado desde un monumento de piedra blanca con forma de pozo de los deseos que tiene grabadas las palabras “Imagina la Paz” en 24 idiomas diferentes.

La Torre de la Paz Imagine está formada por 15 grandes reflectores rodeados por varios prismas que actúan como espejos y proyectan la luz verticalmente hacia el cielo, alcanzando normalmente una altitud de al menos 4.000 metros. Enterrados debajo de esa torre con forma de pozo de los deseos hay más de medio millón de deseos que personas de todo el mundo enviaron por escrito a Yoko Ono durante años, como parte de otro proyecto artístico llamado “Árboles de los deseos”.

La Torre de la Paz Imagine ilumina el cielo de Reykjavik todos los años entre el 9 de octubre (la fecha de nacimiento de John Lennon) y el 8 de diciembre (la fecha de su muerte).

Traditionally boreholes are drilled and ground water is pumped and treated to remove hydrocarbons. By using the OPEC mop skimmers and ST5 gravity oily/water separators to transfer oils from the boreholes to 1000 IBC’s ready for collection. This is a big saving in man power and logistics of moving and treating polluted ground water in brownfield sites.

So far the machines are recovering more than 6000 litres per week of polluted hydrocarbons. In some cases the waste oils can be re-cycled and used for secondary fuel use in cement kilns and blast furnaces.

This is one of many successful applications of OPEC machinery used in this way to help clean up the environment.
