WHO calls for united action against HIV in Europe

Vienna, 21 July 2010 – Speaking at the XVIII International AIDS Conference in Vienna, WHO experts today drew attention to the glaring disparities between countries in western and eastern Europe in providing access to HIV services for people living with HIV.

“While HIV epidemics in western Europe are, with some exceptions, generally stabilizing, in many countries in eastern Europe, they rage out of control,” said Dr Andrew Ball, Senior Strategy and Operations Adviser in the HIV/AIDS Department at WHO headquarters. » Read more: WHO calls for united action against HIV in Europe

Iceland enterprise park set to open bariatric and weight loss surgery facility

asbru_iceland_19A new hospital facility specialising in bariatric surgery and weight loss surgery is preparing to undergo developments in the second quarter of 2010 at the Asbru Enterprise Park in Iceland.

The hospital will accommodate around 35 hospital beds, three operating theatres and have ability of treating up to 4,000 patients per year. The hospital facility at the Asbru Enterprise Park, situated near Keflavik International Airport, will specialise in weight loss surgery, bariatric surgery and gastric bypass surgery.

New Sentencing Guidelines issued for health & safety breaches

The Sentencing Guidelines Council (SGC) has published a definitive guideline on the sentencing of corporations (rather than individuals) for corporate manslaughter under the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 (CMCHA came into force on 6th April 2008) and health and safety offences which result in death contrary to sections 2 and 3 Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HSWA).

Organisations can already be issued with an unlimited fine or be forced to improve safety in the workplace however the new guideline will also apply to health and safety cases other than corporate manslaughter cases where it can be proven that the offence was a significant cause of death and not simply that a death occurred. » Read more: New Sentencing Guidelines issued for health & safety breaches

New medical tourism and health care centre to be opened in Iceland
