When the U.S. Military left the area, Kadeco, Keflavik Airport Development Company, was established with the task of converting the base and its facilities into area for civilian use. The park is now on the forefront of entrepreneurship, business and academic development in Iceland, with focus on technology, renewable energy, medical tourism and engineering.

The Keilir: Atlantic Center of Excellence, located within the park, offers dedicated educational programs and flight training, whilst Iceland’s first data centre and other ventures such as medical tourism are also innovating in their field.

The medical tourism hospital located at Asbru specialises in weight loss surgery, joint replacements and other medical developments opened just last year. The hospital houses around 35 beds, three operating theatres and all together has the capability of treating up to 4,000 patients per year.

Furthermore, the Iceland enterprise park offers business offices of varying size, ranging between 15-60 square metres with the option of divided or combined open spaces. Companies have access to fully equipped 40 square metre meeting rooms and two smaller meeting rooms as well as a 100 square metre kitchen facilities.

Amongst some of the companies located in Asbru offices are innovative and ancillary businesses such as engineering firms and agencies. This creates a great working environment where businesses can receive help from other services within the same walls. Additionally, the park’s location is an extra advantage as Keflavik International Airport, which has direct flights to major cities such as London, Copenhagen and New York, is just a 5 minute drive away.

Visit http://asbru.is/English/ to find out more about the enterprise park and business opportunities in Iceland.

A new hospital facility specialising in bariatric surgery and weight loss surgery is preparing to undergo developments in the second quarter of 2010 at the Asbru Enterprise Park in Iceland.

The hospital will accommodate around 35 hospital beds, three operating theatres and have ability of treating up to 4,000 patients per year. The hospital facility at the Asbru Enterprise Park, situated near Keflavik International Airport, will specialise in weight loss surgery, bariatric surgery and gastric bypass surgery.

Due to the close proximity with Keflavik International Airport, Asbru Enterprise Park proves to be the perfect location for the hospital, alongside it’s already strong background in tourism. It is believed that up to 300 news jobs will be created by the development of the hospital, its related services and close tourism facilities.

In addition, the enterprise park also offers aviation training, Iceland’s first international data centre, geothermal research and academic programs at Keilir: Atlantic Center of Excellence. Asbru Enterprise Park is helping to push Iceland to the forefront of education, business development and entrepreneurship.

In 2006, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) abandoned its military base, leaving over 900 local people unemployed. Instead of focusing on the negative aspects of the departure, the local population looked at the opportunities and consequently established the Asbru Enterprise Park.

For more information regarding weight loss and bariatric surgery at the Asbru Enterprise Park visit http://asbru.is/English/

The proposed health care centre will specialise in fat-removal and joint replacements, amongst other medical treatments. The centre will also have to capability of treating up to 4,000 patients per year, housing around 35 hospital beds and three operating theatres.

“The project is definitely one of the most exciting innovative ventures in Iceland at the present time. It will constitute an important aspect of the build-up and development at Asbru. The cluster of health-related services at Asbru will be strengthened through the operations of the hospital, and this will attract even more diverse companies involved in medicine, treatment, health-promotion, research, education and the production of various health-related products, to name a few,”
commented Kjartan Thor Eiriksson, Managing Director of Kadeco.

Due to the Enterprise Park’s close proximity to Iceland’s International Airport, the location proves to be ideal for the new health care centre. This medical tourism venture is set be a precious source of income for Iceland, Iceland tourism and the Icelandic people, as up to 300 jobs are expected to be available throughout the project.

The Asbru community of education and entrepreneurs in southwest Iceland is one of the country’s leading innovation centres and has come one step closer to adding world-class health services to the list of onsite amenities.

The Asbru Innovation Centre is located on the former NATO base right next to Keflavik International Airport, the busiest airport in Iceland. Asbru is now set to become home to a brand new international health services centre, according to the new Term Sheet jointly signed by the Keflavik Airport Development Corporation (Kadeco) and Iceland Health.

The Iceland Health medical centre idea fits well with Kadeco’s efforts to nurture a health village concept whereby businesses working in health related industries are clustering together to exploit synergies.

Iceland Health wants to boost specialist medical services at Asbru and start regular medical tourism in Iceland. Iceland Health’s initial product offering will include joint surgery and obesity surgery, including important post-surgery rehabilitation. Obesity services will also include a range of behavioural treatments against obesity.

In the pursuit of excellence, Iceland Health will collaborate intimately with well-known experts in the field from Scandinavia and the UK. To this end, important personnel have already been recruited for the project.

A professional advisory council will work behind the scenes to support the Asbru health centre. The advisory council already has confirmed members including: Otto Nordhus, chest wall surgeon; Bjarni Sem, heart surgeon and Leif Ryd, orthopaedic surgeon. The council will also include obesity and rehabilitation experts.

The largest single clients at the Iceland Health clinic are expected to be the public authorities in Scandinavia and the UK, as well as large Scandinavian institutions unable to fulfil their obligations to authorities with regard to the volume of required operations and therapy.

In addition to this, a significant portion of visitors to the Asbru centre will be made up of British and Scandinavian citizens who have had to wait longer than three months for essential medical treatment.

The new clinic will assure that Asbru is seen as the biggest centre for health tourism in Iceland. Asbru is already home to several innovative companies in the health and wellness sector. More information can be found at: www.asbru.is
